Hematuria
Family History
 
a.

Microscopic hematuria can be passed as an autosomal dominant trait and can represent benign familial hematuria also known as "thin basement membrane disease." Alport’s syndrome and autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease could present as hematuria and is inherited.

b.

Alport’s syndrome and autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease typically progress to renal failure.

c.

Alport’s syndrome is associated with high frequency hearing loss usually earlier than middle age

d.

Although hypertension is usually essential, early onset hypertension could be a sign of renal disease.

e.

Von Willebrand’s disease may rarely be associated with hematuria.

f.

Renal stones and hypercalciuria may be familial.

g.

Sickle cell disease or trait can be a cause of gross hematuria in African-American children.
