Some diseases that cause chronic
renal failure may be inherited.

Always ask if any members of the family
ever required dialysis or a kidney transplant.

Alport’s syndrome is frequently associated
with early onset high frequency hearing loss.

Ask if other members of the family have
a history of hypertension, hematuria, proteinuria, or urinary
tract infections.
Sometimes nephritis other than Alport’s
syndrome or obstructive uropaties may be familial.

Autosomal dominate polycystic kidney may
not have progressed in a parent and be manifested by urinary tract
infections, hypertension or hematuria.

Reflux nephropathy may be familial and
may have presented as recurrent urinary tract infections as a child. |
